Women’s Health: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Understanding PCOS or PMOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women of reproductive age. Despite its name, not every woman with PCOS develops ovarian cysts. Instead, PCOS is a complex endocrine disorder involving hormone imbalances that can affect ovulation, metabolism, fertility, and long-term health. PCOS has recently been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better describe this complex condition.
Women with PCOS may experience irregular menstrual cycles, difficulty becoming pregnant, acne, unwanted facial or body hair, thinning hair on the scalp, or unexplained weight gain. However, symptoms vary widely, and some women have only a few noticeable signs.
While the exact cause of PCOS remains unknown, researchers believe it results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, and elevated androgen (male hormone) levels play an important role.
Common Symptoms of PCOS
- Irregular or absent menstrual periods
- Difficulty ovulating or infertility
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Acne or oily skin
- Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)
- Hair thinning or hair loss
- Darkened skin patches (acanthosis nigricans)
- Fatigue and low energy
Why Early Management Matters
Without appropriate management, PCOS may increase the risk of developing insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, endometrial changes, and cardiovascular disease. Early evaluation and personalized treatment can help reduce these risks while improving overall health and quality of life.
A Naturopathic Approach to PCOS
At Balanced Care, we look beyond symptom management to better understand the factors contributing to each individual’s hormonal imbalance. Your care plan may include:
- Comprehensive health and menstrual history
- Nutritional counseling to support healthy blood sugar regulation
- Lifestyle recommendations for sleep, stress management, and physical activity
- Evaluation for thyroid dysfunction or other contributing conditions
- Individualized supplement recommendations when appropriate
- Collaboration with other healthcare providers when needed
Our goal is to help improve hormonal balance, support regular ovulation, reduce symptoms, and promote long-term metabolic health.
